LAST SITE UPDATE: December 13th 2009 / Jason M. Villanueva
Keep coming back to see more updates to PHOTOS & DESIGNS I come up with. Some quotes I use from time to time:
"I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass, and I'm all out of bubblegum."
" Im not the best, Im not the worst, I just try my best ! "
" Now listen up! Back in my day, we didn't have fancy computers and art programs ! We had paper and crayons. Two crayons and a sheet of paper for the entire table ( 8 to a table )! And we had to share the paper ! "
STORY written up about me ( early 2009 )....enjoy
During the day, Jason M. Villanueva sits behind an iMac with a 24 inch screen, creating ads, flyers and packaging for a Scottsdale nutritional products company. You have probably seen some of his designs on the shelves of health food stores. In the evenings and on weekends, however, Jason grabs his camera and goes out and shoots the world from a very different perspective than seen in most family snapshots.
We caught up with Jason on a recent Saturday morning. He was cruising in his customized Scion xB blasting an Squeeze DVD through his front video monitor in his car. “Just keep your eyes peeled,” Jason said, “for those cardboard boxes they put on the corners that say ‘Yard Sale’. There’s one now!” Jason followed the arrow on the hand-written cardboard box to the front yard full of old clothes, beat up furniture and bent kitchen utensils. “Score!” he said as he pointed to an old black and white TV with rabbit ears antenna in the yard. He whipped out his camera and began taking close-up photos of the ancient TV set. We repeated this ritual at a half dozen more yard sales that morning. Jason was collecting photos of old TVs for a music CD he was designing. The CD cover, like the posters he designs for the band, was planned to be a surreal montage of images that is the trademark of Jason’s work. Later, after the yard sale trek, we sat down and talked about the custom car photos he has become known for among some car groups around town. “I got started with the car photos because I would enter my Scion in the Scion car shows once in awhile. At the shows, I would walk around and take photos of other cars that I especially liked.” We should point out here that these photos were often from bizarre angles and many consisted of tight close-ups of one feature of the car that the casual viewer may not have even noticed. Jason continued, “Often, I would email some of the photos to the guys who owned the car. They would go crazy! They wanted to buy all the photos I had taken of their car, and not only that, they wanted to hire me to do a photo shoot and make posters of their car. It turned into a nice little side business which worked great for me, since I like to shoot cars anyway.”
Jason can do a straight-forward photo shoot of a car for about a few hundred bucks. For those who want something truly unique, though, he can create one of his custom posters featuring your car ( Check out Randode's poster in the folder: Custom Design Car Posters ). For a poster, which is as much art as it is a car photo, expect to pay $$$$$$. I asked Jason what made his posters so unique. “I start with the car photo,” Jason explained, “and add layers, filters and other images, using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. When I’m working on a poster, I tend to really get into it and work all night long. I do my best poster work at 3:00 in the morning. By the time the sun comes up, I usually find that the original image now has over 100 layers. People tell me they are pretty wild.” Jason went on, “When I do these kinds of posters for a rock band, I try to capture the personality and style of the band in the art work.” Jason’s custom posters for bands are usually limited edition tour posters that are given to VIP guests and serious fans who have scored backstage passes.
